Import photos from iPhone to iMac not working

iphone 6S+ iMac 27 2015 latest iOS 11.3.1 and macOS 10.13.4

Problem:



It worked before without problem. Then I imported a huge directory of photos to Photos. Now I get the above error message, even after restarting both devices and changing USB ports. I can still send photos via email. Any hint is appreciated.

Following a hint by sbermann, the problem was solved by airdrop.
