Important things to know when upgrading ram

Hello! I have the late 2008 MBP which has only 2gb of ram. I'm planning on upgrading the ram. With this, I'm just wondering if there is anything one has to know when doing this.

Considering that I boot on both windows (bootcamp) and osx, would the ram be recognized immediately? Or do i have to install or do something first before it does. Is it more advisable to reformat the whole computer? Maybe because of some performance issues.

Touch something metal before touching the components. No need to do anything else but to install the RAM and continue using the machine as before
