How do I import an iMovie project back from my backup drive to the iMovie application

Does your Project show up in the iMovie Projects Library in the main iMovie window? If just drag it to the area of the Library that's covered by your Mac's internal drive.

I have taken the origian project from my timemachine archive and placed it in the iMovie projects folder, but it does not appear in the application when it is launched

Did you drag and drop from Time Machine? I think you are supposed to select the file that you want and select Restore or replace, to put it back where it came from.
