importing address book details from external drive to mac

how do I do this? I have tried simply dragging the address book icon from the external drive into applications but it says I cant do it.
where are the individual contacts kept in the system?
my external is a time machine back up but i only want to transfer certain things so have been doing it manually, music, movies and photos were not a problem.
if i cant do it and sync my iphone will all my contacts go on that way or will my iphone lose all my contacts aswell????
