importing addresses from excel or numbers

Hi

I have about 1000 names on both an excel and numbers spreadsheet and want to import them into a separate file on contacts. The Mozilla/netscape method appears not to work and I can't believe it should be so difficult from Numbers.

Anyone any ideas on a transfer process that doesn't require a degree in writing software?
