Importing audio file into iMovie 09 - gets truncated

I am trying to add an audio file to an iMovie 09 project. Strangely, each time I bring it over (I'm dragging it from the folder straight onto the project) the very last .5 sec or so is lost. The video clip content is far longer than the audio, so fitting the file into the project isn't the problem, so why is iMovie truncating it?
