Importing AutoCAD dwg into 3dsMax

I've created a complex model in AutoCAD 2008 with certain materials attached and I want to import it into 3dsmax, which is easy enough but one thing. I have the objects on different layers. This one has 20 layers, but I've done models with as many has 100 layers. When importing each layer is one object, but I want each object to be individual. How can I do this? If I have to compromise in any way, then maybe that's ok.
