totally cool
I have after effects 5.5 running on a G5 with the latest version of Tiger.
I got some avi files from a client to edit from but they wont import.

It seems like in the past i have been able to do this.

Quicktime does have an export to avi function and so i took a regular
old .mov file and converted it into and avi in quicktime and that wouldnt
import into AE either.

Can someone please tell me if AE even accepts avi files and if it does what are the requirments.

if anyone cares..

i had to convert the files from avi to mp4.

and since AE wont read mp4, i then used QT pro to convert the files to mov/

now they're in. but damn, i had to jump thru some hoops.

What did you use to convert, and how did the quality hold up?

well here is the kicker. QT will encode to avi. so i tried a simple 400k mov file and made it into an avi file. Which wouldnt import into AE.
So even a QT encoded avi file wont import into AE.
I used 'iSquint', which is a freeware program used to convert avis to iPod movies. It converts the clips to mp4s. THEN i used QT pro to convert the mp4s to movs. Blah blah blah.
the clips look fine. almost if there was no transcoding at all.
