Importing Contacts from Contacts 3.1.2 to Contacts 7.1

Sorry if I'm being dim, but I've finally upgraded from my lovely old iMac G4 (running OSX 10.3.9) to a lovely new Mac mini (running 10.8.2). Wow.
How do I transfer all my contacts from Contacts 3.1.2 to Contacts 7.1?
The only thing v3 lets me do is save a .abbu file, and when I try to load/import that into v7.1, I see a message warning me that continuing will overwrite all my existing contacts (which I don't have, so no problem), but then nothing happens - no contacts ...
Anyone able to help please? I have hundreds of contacts ...

I was trying to do it from 5.0.3 to 7.1 using the ".abbu" format but have the same issue as you, nothing happens on the import. I did a vCard export instead and that worked, at least for my v5.0.3.

so not really all that helpful, unless you can have someone you know have an older version that still understands ".abbu" format then have them export as vCard.
