Importing Data from External Hard-drive

Hi there,

i recently had to send my mac book to get repaired, it ended up being a software issue and the lappy was restored to factory settings. Before I took it in I back up everything onto my external hard drive. I would like restore the stuff on my hard drive to my lappy to use the files etc. As you can tell I am a bit of a novice when it comes to this kinda stuff so lay-man's terms would be great :)
