So I am working on a video for school and my friend made a project using final cut pro 5 and I need to open the original file because if I don't I can not keep all the edits he made. Plus all I have at home is express HD 4 is there a way to import final cut pro files into express? Thanks for the help

Try having your friend export an XML. There a different versions of XML (1-4 or 5) and I'm not sure which one would be compatible w/your version of FCE but just have you friend export a few and see which one works.

You'll still need a copy of all the media though as the XML just contains the project file information.

If I recall correctly, the only projects that FCE4 will import are iMovie projects and iMovie XML files.

You can try having your friend export an FCP XLM from the project file on his machine and then File > Import > Final Cut XML from iMovie on your machine. I can't really guarantee that this will work though. I've never been an Express user.
