Importing from HDD(hard drive) camera's from other than iMovie 08

I have an Everio hard drive based video camera, I am in a film class and wondering if there is a 3rd party piece of software that replicated the same fantastic import function built into imovie 08... I just don't USE imovie 08 and it's a pain to have to import with imovie 08 then export as a DV file or something compatible with all of our other software.

If this feature was built into apple's Image Capture app, I really wouldn't even be asking this :)
