importing HD in to iMovie

I have a G5 with imovie version 6.0.3 (267.2). I am trying to import HD footage into iMovie via firewire from a sony handycam (tape). IMovie sees and operates the camera but there is no picture or sound getting to the iMovie monitor screen. The import selection is grayed out and the title of the video at the top of the screen has the (HD 1080i-30) next to the video name. I was told iMovie should automatically convert the HD to standard def. I have read the help manuals and tried to set the preferences in iMovie and on the Mac preference window to no avail.
