Importing video into iMovie 09 results in a clip that plays too fast...

I'm importing 720p HD video from my new digicam, a Panasonic DMC-ZS3. After importing the video into iMovie, the speed of replay is way too fast (2-3x normal speed). I think it may have something to do with the fact that I'm downloading 720p and somehow the progressive scan is confusing iMovie: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9130841&#9130841

Does anyone know how to fix this? I don't want to have to change the speed of the movie after import - it's hard to get just right.

Edit: I wonder if the problem might actually be due to the codec that the camera is using: AVCHD Lite. Any ideas?

I have the same problem... so far my online research tells me I have 2 options:
1. take it back to the store
2. use ShedWorx's Voltaic HD for 39.99 http://shedworx.com/
