When I had my library on a PC, I had an external HDD where I kept all of my music. If I booted up iTunes and tried to play songs from the HDD w/o the HDD being on, I'd get an exclamation point (!) next to each song. This was w/ iTunes 6.XX

I'd like to do that again, but with videos. This way I can update regularly and keep my playlist managed and not switch between libraries. I want to import the video into my library and leave the file on the external HDD. I tried just using the import function this morning, but it turns out that the file was actually imported to my HD on the laptop instead of staying on the external HDD. Is this possible?

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find it.

Thanks.

Could you go to iTunes Preferences -> Advanced -> General and check to see if the option "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" is checked or not? If the option is disabled, iTunes should not copy your video file.
