Importing with iMovie 08

hello forum,

Can anybody fill me in on how I go about importing video from my Sony hd src-100 into iMovie 08. For some reason, when I hook my camera up to my MacBook, nothing happens in iMovie. However, what does happen is the camera files appear on my desktop.

Any takers on this one?
