Absolutely unhinged performance. Literally 13% higher CPU multicore over the M1 Max and a 52% improvement over the CPU single core! On a computer that doesn't have a fan.

I'm really impressed with the power consumption. I use coconutBattery to put a little display up in the menu bar that includes the estimated battery time left, along with the watt consumption. My previous MacBook Air M1 would range from maybe 2-3 watts with the screen at 50% and not doing anything more taxing than regular web stuff (like being on this site) or writing in a document. The M1 would ramp up to maybe 12 watts max when I had the brightness up and on a Zoom call with a half dozen people.

Despite being a ton faster, I'm finding the M4 Air ramps its energy consumption nice and low as well when doing light work. Right now, typing this, it's telling me I have 22 hours of battery life and is only consuming 2.5 watts. But right after I restarted and applications were loading left and right, I saw it ramp up to like 25 watts briefly, which the M1 would never manage to pull.
