I have just noted a big improvement in the sound of my paired HomePods. Not sure when or how this happened. The HomePod 2's have the latest update. and the Mac Studio, and iPhone 14 Pro Max are up to date. I noticed this after my Mac updated last week. I was playing from the Mac Studio and I also noticed more volume and much better sound. I went through some of my bench mark speaker test albums and yes I could hear a difference. The bass is much smoother and the mid-range deficit has been addressed. I also seems like Siri is a little more accurate, this last could be I am learning how to ask for stuff. I have very eclectic tastes in music. I just asked My HomePods to play "Dos Brains" it nailed it. I had trouble with this request in the past.

There have been complaints about responsiveness of the HomePods. I have the full sized Alexa, and the Google home assistant. Alexa is far more responsive but it is always standing by with massive Amazon servers to handle your requests, and maybe sell you something. The Google Home Assistant is a little less responsive but rules for information requests. Siri is much more concerned with privacy then the first 2 platforms. The one thing both the Alexa and Google have is you can adjust its sensitivity. Siri HomePod does not have the same adjustment.
