Currently (March 2019) BB has a sale going on with the 256gb 2017 Mac Book Pro for roughly the same price as the 256gb 2018 MBA. ($200More) Now, the MBP is 2.3 vs MBA 1.6 for processing, both are i5, MBP is 7th gen vs MBA 8th, no touchbars or touch things, etc. but I only need for writing, cerfing the net, email ... Is the 2nd gen butterfly keyboard with the warranty fix now a better gamble on the MBP than the 2018 3rd gen MBA that isn't "under warranty?"

It's my hard drive:
We actually use the laptop about 98% of the time as a hard drive; I will need to buy a dock for all my old tech, the monitor, printer, keyboard, externals because I'll need more HD ... but either is within budget. I do need the use of a laptop or iPad occasionally travelling, but doing a Mac mini + iPad takes me over budget. And using as a HD actually solves the issue with iCloud, syncing, etc. (But I know that actually being able to use the Laptop as a station now is going to be much more difficult that it has been with the 2009 MBP.)

So ... Any suggestion as to which to get?

they should both serve your needs quite well. i will get the MBP since it's cheaper. do note that while it has keyboard warranty, it can be an hassle to constantly visit apple or your laptop might just be down or under repair just when you need it the most.

alternatively, would a mac mini + ipad mini be within your budget?
