can anyone tell me why i have a question mark in between the icons? not vastly important just confused. when i click on it says 'item cannot be found'. thanks!

Hold the Command key and drag it off. It's a link to something that's no longer there.

Also, if you'd like to toy around with that, menu-click the area next to it and you can customize that toolbar. You can drag a lot of things into that space, including apps, folders, etc.

I rarely use it except for a script that pops windows into a pre-specified size.
