When using iPhoto I chose not to check "Importing ...copy items to the iPhoto library" option. I used to store some of my larger photo folders one an external hard drive and the rest on my internal. However, i upgraded my internal hard drive and moved those other large folders from the external to my internal hard drive. So now those photos come up with "Insert the disk or connect to the server volume and wait for it to appear on the desktop, then try again" (obviously since they were moved." is there an easier way to repair these links that finding each photo one by one in iPhoto? it is around 2000 photos so that would take forever.
