Hi,
I'm relatively clueless about how this all works but I'll have a stab at telling you what I want.
Basically I'm looking at buying the creative gigaworks t40 2.0 speakers for my desktop setup at home. The only thing that's putting me off at the moment is the lack of a subwoofer.
Now I could just buy a set of 2.1 speakers, but I'm at the edge of my budget with the t40s and don't think I'll find a 2.1 set anywhere near as good as the t40s for the same price.
So what I planned to do was buy the T40s, and then somewhere down the line I can add a decent sub to the setup.
Since the t40s don't have a sub out I thought I'd just go through a splitter to both, but then I have the issue of adjusting 2 volume controls.
Therefore I was wondering, are there any products (or can I hack something together, I'm not bad with a soldering iron) along the lines of a passive in-line volume control that I can put between computer and splitter? Then I could set the levels on the speakers and use this master volume. I'd be open to using a preamp as well (I believe that's what they're for, correct me if I'm wrong).
I'd also be open to other solutions such as suggestions of 2.0 speakers on par with the T40s with a sub out, or if anyone can suggest <£100 2.1 speakers.
A final note - I decided on the T40s in no small part due to their size. I was considering AV40s but my new monitor arrived today and I simply don't have the room on the desk. T40s are about the biggest I can go size wise.
I hope this doesn't read as terribly as I think it might, and thanks in advance
