Almost six years ago, here's what my hard earned $2500 bought me in May 2004
Powermac G5... $2499.
Dual 2.0GHz
512MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForceFX 5200 Ultra
8x SuperDrive
Max Ram 4GB
Two Hard Drives
One Optical Drive
One FW800 port
Can't run Snow Leopard or any future OS ( not that I care today about Snow Leopard, but i can't even run iLife '09...)
That makes today's low end Mac Pro a relative bargain!
Okay Okay so the i5 and i7 iMacs even beat the Mac Pros now, and even the mini and the Macbook will crush my current G5 set up, but at least I can expand the new Pros for hopefully a very long time to come ....
You get so much more now for the same $2500 now is how I look at it. I love saving $$, but for a once every 5-6 year upgrade, $2500 isn't so terrible. That's $500 a year or less than $1.40 per day to own this machine before bucking up for RAM etc. Maybe now I can justify a potential new Mac Pro purchase to my wife!!!
