In Store Pickup AFTER Launch

A few weeks after the iPhone 5 launched (supply was limited for months) I bought my phone by checking in-store pickup availability at a certain time of night and quickly placing my order.

Do Apple stores still update their in-store pickup availability at a certain time? Or is this strategy no longer effective?
