edit: Unable*

Onyx and Disk Utility are saying my startup disk needs to be repaired with my Snow Leopard install disk. I've been wanting to format my HDD anyway, but when I try to boot into the Snow Leopard DVD all I get is the grey Apple logo screen.

I've tried the install DVD that came with my current iMac, a Snow Leopard DVD that I bought for my old iMac, and a USB drive with Snow Leopard on it. They all just show the grey Apple logo screen and never change.

I was having the same problem a few months ago, before my startup disk needed to be repaired, so I don't think that's the issue.

halp?

edit: I tried resetting the SMC and PRAM and repairing disk permissions, didn't make a difference. I can view the DVDs in OS X just fine. I opened the OS X installer and started an install, it was working normally until it had to reboot.
