I've never used Kaspersky in Yosemite after the initial trial, and usually unload it after logging-in. Obviously, I am not receiving updates because of the lapsed subscription.

After installing El Capitan over Yosemite (not without problems!), I found that El Capitan always hung when opening the startup applications, unless I booted in Safe Mode.

I was unable to get the Force Quit window up, but I found that hovering over the Kaspersky icon in the menu bar would start the busy cursor.

I moved the Kaspersky app to trash and restarted. However, a greyed-out Kaspersky icon still showed in the menu bar, and El Capitan still hung.

I downloaded an uninstall app from the Kaspersky support site and ran that successfully.

The icon has now gone and El Capitan no longer hangs.

Incidentally, the installation of El Capitan hung with the progress bar at roughly 95%, and it took me several forced reboots to finally boot into El Capitan. I wouldn't be surprised if that was also caused by the expired Kaspersky. I've yet to spot any evidence that the installation did not complete sufficiently.

I hope that this may be of help to others who never bothered to find out how to get rid of Kaspersky completely.
