Incoming Mail on mac loads days after i have got the actual messages

I have my email account hooked up to the mail application on my mac. When I press the "get mail" button to receive incoming mail, nothing comes up but when I return to my mac later on it says i'll have 3-4 messages that actually arrived days before but the mail application never showed that I had received them. Why isnt my mail coming in on the days it should come in and instead coming in days later?
