Inconsistency with getting Airdrop to work

Using Macs running El Capitan I am having very inconsistent results when trying to use Airdrop. Sometimes it finds the other Macs and many times it will not. I try closing the Airdrop window and reopening it with no luck. Is there some trick to getting it to work?
