Greetings All. When I connect either my Cube or my 366 MHz Clamshell iBook by ethernet crossover cable to my Mini, and then open Network in the Finder window, the Cube or iBook icon invariably shows up on the Mini, but the Mini icon sometimes and sometimes doesn't show up on the Cube or iBook.
Both Cube and iBook behave in the same inconsistent way: Sometimes, poof, the Mini's icon is in the Cube/iBook window, and other times just the Servers icon sits there unaccompanied however long I wait and whatever tricks I try. OTOH there's never the slightest glitch or hesitation on the side of the Mini--and while I can do most things I want to do in networking them by working from there, most things isn't everything!
So far I haven't found any rhyme or reason to this behavior, but I'm certainly no expert, and there could easily be something basic and simple I've overlooked.
The Mini and Cube are running Tiger and the Clamshell is running Panther (10.3.9). I've configured everything per David Pogue's networking instructions on all of them; I've also moved Built-in Ethernet to the top of all their Network Port Configurations windows. What am I missing, I wonder? Damaged cable maybe? (inconsistency has been there from the day I got it...)
Ever encountered something like this before? I really appreciate any clues or comments you might have. THANKS.
