i tried installing the navigon mobilenavigator lite app, which is 1.29 GB, but the settings app and itunes both say i have 2.2 GB left.... (which is suppposed leave .91 GB left after install). But iTunes says I cant install it because I "don't have enough free space available."

im not $pending $300 to run a free application which claims to work with 1.29 GB or less. :p

Don't waste your time.
The app is not functional.
The GPS function doesn't even work.
It will not even let you choose a start location. It just randomly pics some area a few MILES away.

The method the iPhone uses to install actually requires DOUBLE the space of the application, because it copies it onto the phone and then installs it from the package.

You would need more than 2.4GB free to install that app, even though after installation it only takes up 1.2

I guess I'm missing the joke here.

I had thought that might be the case, but wasn't going to offer that, since I wasn't sure how flash file handling was done. That's why I suggested he delete a few small apps to see, since he was close to that amount already.

hmm, only worked with 2.8 GB free....

oh well, i was able to reinstall my other apps, so thanks for the hint.

PS: how did you figure this out?

If it has problems already, and I haven't looked at the cost, but I'll pass too.

I was definitely more interested in the TomTom from the start, but I just want a feel for what any GPS app will feel like. TomTom will most likely be better, because based on this article,

1) the accessory allows for better GPS signal (im assuming this will enable the iPod touches and older iPhone to work with TomTom's app

2) no monthly subscription will be enforced.

From Navigon's FAQs:
In order to install the MobileNavigator Software to your iPhone, you need double the amount of free storage space. After the installation is complete, the extra storage space needed for the installation can be used again.
