Increase max volume output

I was wondering if there was any way of boosting the maximum volume output by my MBP through the speakers. Certain apps, like DVD Players, and VLC when playing some quieter videos, can't reach a high enough volume as would be comfortable.

Also it seems that Windows XP allows much, much higher volume output than Mac OS X, as I have noticed when going from X to XP via. bootcamp on all my Macs.
