Hi all! I have googled the **** out of this question but cannot find a suitable answer specifically related to LaCie RAID system (in my case 6big Thunderbolt 3 connected to a Mac).

I have a 24TB (RAW) LaCie 6big which obviously contains 6 x 4TB drives. It is a RAID 5 configuration. I am running out of room and looking to replace these drives with 8TB volumes whilst keeping the content intact. I have done this before with a Synology NAS system but not a directly connected LaCie.

I understand you can replace a drive and let the RAID rebuild (as you would when a drive dies). I know you replace it with a larger drive and it utilises only what it needs to maintain the current RAID. You can obviously repeat this exercise one drive at a time so I could eventually replace all drives with 8TB units. That sound fair so far?

When I had completed this procedure on the Synology NAS I upgraded the built in Synology O/S indicated the new size of the array and I was able to expand the existing single partition to take advantage of the extra drive space. Now what I need to know is what happens when I do this with the LaCie? Will the LaCie make that new size available to work with? If so does LaCie RAID Manager give me the opportunity to expand the existing or add another partition? Alternatively does the LaCie present the macOS with the existing partition but on a larger volume which we can use Disk Utility to expand/add partitions?

Has anyone done a similar upgrade to a LaCie RAID system before?

Cheers
