I have just looking for a preference setting to change the time period in iChat before my status is set to idle.

I'm looking through com.apple.ichat.plist, but can't find a relevant parameter to change.

Is there a database or index somewhere that depicts plist contents in an easy-to-search and descriptive manner?

Thanks.

You can change the default timeout value (600 seconds) in iChat by entering the following command in Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.ichatagent UserIdleTimeout x
where x is the new value, in seconds.

Ah, ichatagent! That's where the sucker was hiding. Thank you.

Is there a database of this stuff I can search for future reference?

Not really. I find it's quite effective to just Google whatever issue I'm having, since just about anything you can think of has been encountered by many others before.
