Indexing Volumes (43% done)

For some reason, every week or so, the iMac seems to be re-indexing volumes and there seems to be no progress on the indexing: it's stuck at 43%.

Rebooting seems to clear up this situation, but I thought I was done with reboots-to-fix-errors after leaving Windows.

Any reasons why Spotlight gets so confused?

I saw other posts about this issue, but no clear solution. Of course I want to use Spotlight and not disable it so that course isn't a real solution.

I have 10.6.4 OS/X.
