Hi hi. Running OS 12.7.6 on a 2015 MacBook Pro. Recently got a Western Digital 'My Book' external drive, connected via USB-A. Copied a couple of terabytes of stuff onto it from an old hard disk RAID from my just-recently-died old (2009!) Mac Pro.

All went well, except that search is working extremely slowly or not at all. I suspect that's because the OS hasn't had time to do all the indexing – I have some vague memory that it works in the background?

Is there anything I can do to speed up the indexing, or I should just leave the MacBook drive powered on overnight with the external drive plugged in?

Thanks All....

"Slowly" is one thing…"not at all" is another.

Do let it sit ON overnight and see if it completes indexing.

You can tell if it's indexing by trying a Spotlight search…it shows if it's indexing.
