Hey everyone,

My wife is currently getting her doctorate and is going to be starting her research soon. She is looking for software, does not have to be in App Store, to transcribe her interviews. She was going to have someone do it for her, but she felt this was an opportunity to be able to study the data details better.

She is doing a qualitative study and would need software to help her code the data, something that would be able to pick out common phrases and keywords.

Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

Express Scribe Pro by NCH Software has many helpful features, and there’s a free trial. I used it on a couple of research projects.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will pass it along.
Or you just replay the audio files to dictation (either on MacOS or iOS/iPadOS).
Thanks! I will give her that option as well.

I have a related question - I want to transcribe audio from a digital video recording (mp4). Do I have to play the video and rely on a microphone to pick up the audio to transcribe? Is it possible to separate the audio file from the video file? I would think in this world of AI, that there are apps that can take an audio file directly and transcribe it as well as possible. Going to analog and a microphone sensor seems very old school and unnecessary.

OK, I've found a simple way to separate audio from video (QT 10.5>Export>Audio Only) that yields an m4a audio file. But, my other question remains, namely are there any recommended apps to can transcribe an audio file directly?

ELAN is used by linguists for transcribing. It is designed to work with videos as well as sound files. The UI is crude (java or tk), and the learning curve is slightly steep, but there's a light version. It's free.

You can try DaDaScribe.com, I worked on it, and it is completely AI-based. Very cheap, and accurate compared to other automated services:

I'm interested to know your thoughts about it!
