Not sure if this has already been discussed, but I’ve been wondering about the comments on iPhones indexing after being freshly set up or updated.

Does anyone have ”official“ sources that demonstrate these matters?

Personally, I can’t imagine that the devices really take that long to ”index“.

So I can’t find specific documentation but consider this. If you have email setup on your phone, you swipe down and type a keyword for that email. It finds messages. How did it know? Well if it’s indexing email documents photos etc. that takes time to review the info and find key information to build a search index. The more information you have the longer it takes.

Some apps may show up for background services for the battery too.

iOS actually knows how to further optimize your device for the best performance and battery utilization. It usually takes a little bit of time when setting up, doing updates to the os or if new information is added (a large amount).

In general, I understand the concept. But wouldn’t that mean that the phone is constantly indexing since you get new information on your phone?

My problem here is that people tend to make such a big deal about indexing!

When you first set up your device, it indexes all e-mails, iCloud messages, certain app data, etc. which are on the device. For some people this could be a large amount of data. Also if you restore your device, the entire index from the backup has to be reindexed. Of course it also indexes while you are using the device, but adding one message to the index is quicker than adding all. There have been reports of occasional bugs, but I did not know it has been a huge controversy about the time it takes. It works in the background and is ready when it is ready. Spotlight/Siri Suggestions will be limited until indexing is complete, which is natural.
