multi-tasking/background apps are not possible on the iphone, whatever the firmware (unless jailbroken)

Let's make the distinction here that it is technologically possible (ie. all the underpinnings to support it are present in the OS), but it is forbidden as a matter of policy.

If its information you're after, you need to jailbreak your phone and install backgrounder from cydia. You can't do it any other way.
