According to an AT&T rep, if you are considering creating a joint account you should wait until all parties have purchased your new iPhones.
By transferring joint responsibility the party transferring will lose eligibility to upgrade for 11 months. According to the rep we spoke with AT&T is very strict and inflexible in making exceptions.
This is contrary to what many AT&T reps are telling customers who are interested in doing this. In fact, we spoke to a rep last week who assured us that joining accounts would not have any consequences on the upgrade pricing.
In short, do not join accounts until after you have upgraded your phones or risk becoming ineligible for the discounted upgrade price.
I hope this information helps anyone who is considering joining plans prior to getting their new iPhones.
