Information please. (will jailbreak ruin the software or slow it down)

Hi im going to go buy an apple Ipod Touch, but i was wondering how jailbreak and stuff to add applications work, will it somehow ruin the software or slow it down, make it freeze or anything at all?

Any kinds of information would be extremely helpful.

If you install reliable apps you wont have an issue
