macOS Infra Red Transmission and receiving

Hey all,

I have an old Bondi blue Rev A. iMac and I was thinking of a way to make it useful once more. I notice that it has an infra red port on the front that is connected to what looks a lot like one of the old Mac serial ports.

Is there a way of interfacing with this port in either Cocoa or Carbon so that I could effectively use it as a remote control?
