I just got my new appleTV and had seen many people mentioning infuse as an app for playing video from local servers. I have installed it and set it up but now whenever I try and play something it just takes me to page with various ways to pay to upgrade to Pro. Have I miss-understood and there is no free option ?

Pro adds a number of features, including support for some video types.

You can receive a free 30 day trial by selecting the Yearly option.

More info on what's included with Pro can be found here.

So is that a polite way of saying "no its not free" ? Or is it just that the format of video I have selected can't be played for free ?

Infuse licenses various paid codecs, so certain video types will require Pro. Many other types can be played in the free version.

For example, pretty much all the HDR samples found at https://4kmedia.org can be played in the free version.

I can wholeheartedly recommend to subscribe to Infuse. I’ve used it for years to stream from my NAS. It’s really good, quality software. I also stream remotely when away (not so much these days) and it works just as well then.
