My father recently passed away. He had a Macbook Pro that I inherited. Before he passed it got infected by some type of Russian malware that requires you to give them money to get a password to boot the machine (when connected to any network). I want to wipe and reinstall the OS on the computer. The OPTION+COMMAND +R does not work. COMMAND +R does. I have been through his papers and disk and cannot find his OS disks nor his apple id. How do I accomplish the wipe reload ?

I am an APPLE newbie (30 years of PC) so please be gentle.

thanks.

If it has a firmware password (lock icon with text entry box for password) at "first boot", there are two ways to get it removed.

1. Apple will remove it, but ONLY if you provide them with the original sales receipt. If you don't have that, forget it -- they won't touch it. Sounds like you don't have this option, so...

2. Some 3rd-party shops -might- be willing to do this. But it's up to you to find them. Some ebay sellers might offer help, too. Again -- up to you.

Other than that, you might as well put it into the closet and forget about it.
Or.. get the entire motherboard replaced with a fresh one.
