Initial app/contact sync question -computer necessary?

I have an issue I need to work around. I've bought an iPhone 4S unlocked and need to sync my apps/contacts, but do not have access to my computer. Would it be possible during that initial sync to use iCloud, which I have signed up for on my comp but which my 3G currently does not have? The techs at the store said I absolutely need my computer, but I wonder if I can work around that by syncing my old phone to another computer (it is currently synced to my old comp and my current one). Let me know if this sounds like it will work keeping in mind the iTunes on the other computers I have access to might be synced to other phones.
