I have an ATI 4870 card. Is the initial startup / wakeup loud fan noise from the computer fan or the ATI 4870 card? If its from the video card, does the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 also have a similar sound?

Computer fan, it's normal.

hmm. I've read several users mention on this forum state that the 4870 card is silent, except during startup which is why I thought that was part of the startup noise.

Well mine makes a loud fan noise at start up too and I have the 8800

Can anyone with the GeForce GT 120 card let us know if there's the initial vrooom startup noise (or when the computer is out of sleep mode).

Certainly. No initial startup noise on my 2009 Mac Pro with a GT 120. Regarding the sleep mode, the only sound I hear is the click from a relay when going into and out of sleep mode.

I had a GT120 in my Mac Pro which I replaced with a 4870.
The GT120 doesn't make that noise at all, only the 4870 does.

The loud fan noise is part of the POST (Power On Self Test) of the 4870 card and perfectly normal.

I think it also used to blow off the dust and blow out the cobwebs for those of us who use the Mac Pro with the 4870 card to mainly check emails and watch You Tube videos.:D 2XBlow/Dust&Cobwebs

Well that and posting on Facebook! :D

I've noticed that bringing my Mac Pro out of sleep, the fan only spins ups for a second or 2. A little longer on startups though. I don't find the spin up annoying or too loud. Other than the spin up, it's a very quite machine. Even when I'm watching some hot porn clips it never spins up to cool down.
