I am returning a 2020 13" MBP as I re-ordered a different config. I accidentally initiated a return by mail thinking it was also for in store returns. I contacted Apple via chat and they said in order to return in store the return by mail has to be cancelled and it will take 24-48hrs and they initiated the cancellation. However the automated return email I received from Apple gives return instructions but also says I can return in store. Did the Apple rep give me wrong info? I can wait 24-48hr but if I don't need to I will drop it off sooner potentially.

Yes, you can return it in store at any time. It will simply show in Apple's system as returned. Plus, you will get your money back much faster.
