I regret having purchased the epson cx5900 multi-function printer, unless there is a workaround. I replaced the black ink cartridge only to be told that the other three colour cartridges also need to be replaced. Unfortunately, they MUST be replaced, otherwise the printer won't work, even if I only want to use the black ink only. The fact of the matter is that I have hardly printed in colour, only 2 pages! Sad points:
1. Buying new cartridges is expensive, especially for those living in 'developing' countries.
2. The printer automatically consumes "a little" ink when turned on.
3. These epson ink cartridges contain nasty chips.
4. Unlike with earlier models, the Epson Chip Resetter cannot be used, such as available from http://www.epsonchipresetter.com
An interesting free software solution is available from http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml.
It is capable of resetting the memory of the cartridges and works with several printer models! Unfortunately, it is not compatible with the mac. When I ran it under Windows 98 through VirtualPC, the program just quits. I don't use a PC, so can't try it on that.
Help: Is there a similar mac compatible piece of software??? If there is, this would solve the problems of many aggrieved purchasers of new printers.
