I'm usually sensitive to these sorts of things, but I agree with you. I'm not sure why anyone would expect it to work when you've basically interrupted the HR IR beams with a layer of black/green/whatever. It's similar to putting on a long-sleeved shirt and the watch over the material. Not. Gonna. Work.

It's a layer in between the watch and the blood vessel, and therefore it can interfere with proper reading of the blood pressure.
