Input for sound on IPhone?

Inside my head
I was wondering if the headphone jack can be used as a general input. It works for head phones, but let's say I wanted to record audio from a different device right into it. Could I use an auxiliary cable and the Voice Memos app?

I would test it if I were home where all my auxiliary cables are, but I'm not.
