is there anyway to find where the original picture (from file) came from after you've forgotten where you got it in the first place?

This is when you use Insert Picture From File.

Does Word just abandon or ignore the link to the original?

And if so is the embedded file the quality of the original?
 
Word makes a copy of the pic, not a link. It doesn't care where it came from, even if you dragged it from a web page to your document.
